Gold Leaf, Indian Inks and acrylics on canvas
Lockdown has allowed my imagination to run riot while re-reading and watching old Pirate films, National Geographic programmes and looking at photographs of dappled light under the water and on the sea bed. I was obsessed with the Biggles books as a child and dreamt of swimming in the South Seas, diving for pearls and solving crimes.
This painting is a nod to the notion of sunken treasure. Using layer upon layer of paints and inks on top of gold, I have created the distilled essence and sensation of swimming under water and getting glimpses of what might be treasure or just might be shafts of light coursing through the turquoise warm water.
Interestingly this painting will respond well in many different lights. A shaft of sunlight will illuminate a hidden pocket of gold, a spotlight something completely different. Enjoy and let your imagination go.
There is no print of this painting - just the original. Please note therefore, that this is a personal (not professional) photograph and in the flesh the work has much more depth, hue, texture and joy.
